Para professionals for mental healthcare
Anyone can experience mental health problems and as individuals, organizations and communities we need to take steps to promote positive mental healthcare along with physical healthcare. While a large part of India’s population can benefit from mental healthcare, there are only 343 trained clinical psychologists and 2219 psychiatrists. The need clearly outnumbers the demand.

In a scenario like this it is important to integrate mental health component after assessing needs of communities through partnerships with CSOs to reach out marginalised communities. At Manas we believe it is equally important to build capabilities of individuals who can in times of need support basic mental healthcare of people around them. With this in mind, Manas Foundation has been building a taskforce of paraprofessionals in the last decade and has trained over 3000 people in the process.

On 25th Feb 2014, Monica Kumar, the founder of Manas, conducted an interactive workshop on "The Role of Counsellors in School" as part of SCERT's training programme on "Leadership Strategic Management and School Administration". The workshop attempted to demystify mental health as a concept and service, and underlined the need for counselling in schools in light of the rapidly changing technologies and norms amongst school children today. The workshop was attended by 200 principals and heads of government schools from the National Capital Region.
