CHARTER OF RIGHTS FOR PEOPLE WITH MENTAL ILLNESS

Manas was responsible for organizing the north region consultation of the Fourth Consultation Meet on Access to Justice for People with Mental Illness in New Delhi on 12th October, 2007 in partnership with Anjali, Kolkata; Bapu Trust, Pune; Basic Needs, Bangalore. It is a formidable pressure group involved in advocacy for the rights of people with mental illness and amendments to the mental health act with the constitutional and governmental agencies.

A workshop on the Charter of Rights is based on the awareness that people with mental illness are not enjoying their rights. The workshop was well attended by the 50 stakeholders in the mental health sector and civil society, professionals such as lawyers or psychiatrists, users & care takers. Many important interventions were suggested in the area of legal capacity & forced treatment. We were privileged to have with us HOD, Dept of Social Work, from NIMHANS Bangalore with us.
