A FIRST EVER EXPERIENCE FOR THE UNDERPRIVILEDGED GIRLS IN NIRMAL CHHAYA

CELEBRATING INDEPENDENCE DAY WITH A TWIST THROUGH A FASHION SHOW AT CHILDREN’S HOME FOR GIRLS, NIRMAL CHHAYA COMPLEX

Date: 14th August 2012

Venue: Children’s Home for Girls, Nirmal Chhaya Complex, Tihar Jail

Event: Independence Day Celebrations

Manas Foundation, a mental health organization from the time of its conception in the year 2000, has been deeply committed to the cause of mental health in India. Manas believes in a positive approach to wellbeing and for this reason, keeps innovating to promote positive mental health in India. Manas has been working with the underprivileged for the past 12 years and deeply believes in bringing in change in their lives.

Nirmal Chhaya complex run by the Delhi Government in Tihar Jail is comprised of 9 custodial homes for women. These homes house over 800 destitute women, and women who have come from harsh backgrounds.

To celebrate the spirit of Independence, Manas foundation organized a fashion show and beauty pageant event which turned out to be a first time experience and dream come true for the girls in the home.

The event was organized by the Mental Health Unit at the complex which is run by psychologists of Manas Foundation, under the guidance and support of the Managing Trustee, Ms Monica Kumar. The 22 girls were dressed and trained to walk the ramp. The event also had 3 rounds out of which selected girls were involved in a Q & A round, where we received heartwarming responses. When a participant was asked what she wished to convey to Indians on Independence day, she responded saying that she hoped all Indians would respect each other and believe in the spirit of togetherness and peace.

This grand event was attended by the Government officials at the Nirmal Chhaya Complex- the District officer, the members of the CWC and the superintendents. In putting this show together, Manas Foundation was supported by Fashion show coordinator and creative head, Ayushi Jain of Masquemodas and Rigveda Singh, Production Head of Rigveda Motion Pictures. The dresses for the event were provided by Samuel Foundation and the hair and make up for the girls was done by Shine Foundation.

Through this event, the girls were also told about the various opportunities that lay ahead of them in the world outside the home. The girls informed that being part of a custodial care set up, they never realized that there were so many options that were available to them. Thus, the event organized by Manas Foundation was greatly appreciated by one and all and successfully celebrated the spirit of Independent India by building upon the values of freedom, expression and fraternity amongst the residents and staff of the Children’s Home for Girls at the Nirmal Chhaya Complex.
