The mental health of an individual and of a community is influenced by the cultural milieu, social factors, and economic circumstances. While serving diverse populations through our programs in different regions across the country, we have realised how important it is to understand and respond appropriately to these influences.
Our team of experts span not only the various mental health disciplines, but also the fields of social sciences, education, and law. The special role of gender is a major area of interest at Manas. This breadth of knowledge and multiplicity of perspectives at Manas is reflected in our training and research programs.
Culture influences the meanings assigned to every experience, and in turn to every illness. While working in our community mental health programs, which are located in remote, isolated and underserved regions, we strive to learn about, and learn from, the beliefs and practices unique to that region.
Where modern psychiatry has prioritized a biomedical approach, both our services and our research attempt to respond to the cultural, social, economic and gender-based realities of the populations we serve.
