About Us

advanced divider

In the year 2001, we came into existence with the mission to create & promote mentally healthy communities and institutions by raising awareness to reduce stigma, providing accessible mental health services, and capacitating institutions to integrate mental health into their delivery systems, through a psychosocial approach.

We aim to adopt a shift from the medical model of well-being and focus on the person; not on the mental illnesses. We believe that all individuals, organizations, and societies have mental health concerns and we all need to address this issue for leading a more complete and fulfilling life.

We strengthen community based support systems through services i.e.: conducting individual and group counselling, conducting training and sensitisation workshops, creating a task-force of barefoot counsellors through capacity building of frontline workers in public delivery systems, organizing and coordinating campaigns on raising awareness regarding mental health and gender justice etc. With over a decade of experience on mental health focused largely on women, children and youth, in the year 2014, Manas Foundation organically evolved its second pillar of intervention on gender justice.

Barabari ki Dagar Surakshit Safar, as is popularly known aims towards creating safe and equal spaces for women by working with public transport drivers through a mental health perspective and gender equality lens. Today this programme is Asia’s one of the largest programming on engaging men to promote gender equality.

We began by providing comprehensive mental health services in the form of psychotherapy, assessments, psychiatry and child guidance. These services have remained our core strength, even as new programs have emerged and grown over the last two decades. (give it emphasis on the spine visually)

Simultaneously, we began translating our concept of community based mental health into ground reality. We began working with CSO partners to plug-in mental health services to their existing programs.

Our flagship program, MINDMAP, implemented in partnership with SDTT, reached out to a host of CSOs from 2006 to 2013.

This period also saw us integrate mental health into programs serving many vulnerable populations.

We worked with:

  • MSM groups at high risk of AIDS in 2007, with the support of OXFAM.
  • Reproductive and Child Health program of the DWCD, Delhi
  • Disadvantaged urban youth with YouthReach Foundation from 2013-16.
